According to legend, Hawaiian petroglyph moon signs can be traced back to 200 A.D. when Kauai, the oldest Hawaiian island, was home to exceptional artisans and stone masons. Folklore says they would work at night creating vast projects such as the Menehune Fishpond (still seen today) and by day carve petroglyph birth signs, based on the Hawaiian Moon Calendar, into lava rock.
